Heroes: Season One

A review of the Blu-Ray version
I'm not even going to review the show, as many people countless times have said what I already think in other reviews. I'm going to cover the quality of the Blu-Ray, and whether you should upgrade from your DVD/HD-DVD. Needless to say, this season has great acting, a great story, great special effect (for TV), and great writing. It's a shame the series went crazy after Bryan Fuller left after this season, but when he returned in Volume 4 the show became good again. Here's hoping the show keeps the quality up!

VIDEO QUALITY: 3.5

Sadly, Heroes' video quality is pretty disappointing. That's not to say the video quality is bad by any means, but I expect better from a show with such high production value as Heroes.

I'll start off with the positive: The video quality is light-years ahead of the DVD release. Gone is the macro-blocking and over-sharpening of the DVD video, and in is the high detail and bright colors of the Blu-Ray video. With TV shows in...

Great show, NOT truly Blu-Ray quality
The show is great...watched it on DVD once already. But I'm very disappointed in the supposed Blu-ray quality of the discs. Scenes are granulated and few scenes are truly Blu-ray'd out. They were so much more expensive, but you can just about get the same quality on DVD...certainly not enough of an upgrade to justify the price increase.

Should have just been a miniseries
They really should have just made this a miniseries because the first season was the best of the shows run and should have just ended then and there. Aside from my feelings on how they should have made the show, the Blu-Ray transfer is nice looking next to the DVD version. It's not the best transfer I've seen, they have a lot of murky looking shadows and darkly lit scene problems with the transfer, being that they look pixelated and muddy. Other than that, the effects look good, colors are vibrant and detail is good. There is no new features from the DVD version and the box design is exactly the same. If you are a fan of the show you should get this. If you like the first season only like me, it's pretty worth the affordable price for one of the best first seasons of a show ever, it's just a shame they didn't stop there.

Give This Practice a Try!
I was fortunate to be able to attend Diana's restorative yoga classes in person, but then I moved to another state. Since then, I have been hoping that Diana would produce her own yoga DVD and, happily, that day has arrived. Through voice over, Diana guides you through a series of gentle yoga sequences while also introducing breathing techniques. The camera shots are perfectly paced and feature the yoga model demonstrating the postures while Diana gives voice over instruction. The floor based sequences are very gentle and slow paced, encouraging you to really settle into the pose and the moment. Better than kegels!
Better than kegels! Easy to follow, effective exercises that are easy to fit into your daily routine. Great for strengthening the pelvic floor and toning the lower abdominal muscles. I highly recommend it to any woman!

Fantastic!
As a senior citizen,and mother of 5, I was happily surprised with the way I feel after doing the exercises. My backaches have subsided considerably, and I really don't worry about "leaky accidents". Thanks Karen

Strange DVD
The exercises in this DVD are helpful, but the music sounds like the kind of music you would hear if watching a porno movie. Once I master the exercises, I am going to do them with the mute on.
If I'd known it, I would have bought a book instead.

Bonanza: The Complete Fourth Season

Bonanza Series 4
As with the earlier sets - the quality is amazing. Series 4 has some really great episodes including The Hayburner which Bonanza fans have rated their favourite all time episode as well as the brilliant Elegy for a Hangman and this episode has a great extra of a commentary by Keir Dullea which not only covers the making but sets the background which was during the Cuban Missile Crisis - some interesting historial data. With winter coming up - watching this DVD is a nice way to spend the evenings

As revealed earlier, Bonanza - The Complete Fourth Season, Parts One & Two Bundle Pack, will be released on October 2nd, 2012, and is published by CBS DVD. Volume One contains five disks with 18 shows. volume Two contains four disks with the remaining 16 shows. Extras and SRP are yet to be revealed. This is the set to get. I can't hardly wait to pre-order this DVD bundle from Amazon ASAP !!!

Ahh...the memories!
I was quite the tomboy when I was 9 and I used to tie a pillow (my saddle) to the arm of a rocking chair and ride my "pony" across the range on the Ponderosa along with the "Cartwrights". Now, when I hear that theme music again, I'm instantly returned to those wonderful years! These DVD's are fabulous. Great sound, colour, content ... and those incredible actors! I can't wait for Season 5!

Shut Up And Play The Hits [Blu-ray]

This 3 disc set is Oscilloscope release #45. Inside is the documentary feature about LCDSSs' final performance at MSG. The movie has whole songs from the concert which emphasize the quieter and meditative tone of the interview segments and over the shoulder next morning footage. There are extra extended interview segments with James Murphy if you didn't get enough during the movie. The main feature really is the double disc set of the concert, which features 2.0 stereo and 5.1 mixes both sounding rich and clear. The near 4 hour show is documented in its entirety including backstage breaks. While it can be exhausting to sit through everything this set offers, you will find a greater understanding of yourself and the band if you listen close and loud. My speakers were buzzing by the finale and I was fine with it.

A Wonderful And Joyous Concert, With a Sad Ending.
I've been interested in electronica music and the Amazon computer suggests a lot of things that it thinks I might like. About five years ago it suggested a CD by LCD Soundsystem titled "Sound of Silver." I took the suggestion seriously because I'd read a review in "Rolling Stone" and I'd already decided that this would probably be a disc I'd enjoy. I bought and I indeed liked it very much and followed up later by also purchasing (and reviewing) "This is Happening" and "London Sessions." This was just a very good band and I loved their music and James Murphy was a terrific singer! Excellent recordings!

Well, LCD Soundsystem quickly and easily worked it's way into my list of a half-dozen favorite musical acts (including deadmau5, Daft Punk and Matthew Dear) that were the highest on my playlist. Then the notice came out that they were shutting the band down. Quitting? How can this be? This is one of the freshest and best bands around and they're quitting right as they reach...

LCD soundsystem at their best
No need for a long review here. Simply an amazing performance by a solid band. Not many out there making music of this caliber in my opinion. Would have loved to have been there but the DVD is great substitute. One of the better Live performance DVDs I have seen.

Whitney: Season One

Don't listen to the bad reviews!!!
Seriously, this is the funniest show since friends. I LOVE Whitney! She and Alex are one of the best TV couples ever. Even my husband, who is the most critical TV viewer EVER loves this show. Give it a try, you'll be hooked!

Keep 'Em Cumming!
I know this show was the butt of many 2011-2012 TV season jokes. I, however, was relieved (and very thankful!) that it was renewed for a second season. It truly is one of the funniest shows currently on the air and one of my favorites of all time. I couldn't wait to watch it every week. While my DVR would fill up with weeks' worth of other shows, I'd catch WHITNEY weekly. Besides 2 Broke Girls, it was the only new show this past season to make me laugh out loud. Ironically, that show is from Whitney Cummings, too.

In WHITNEY, Whitney Cummings and Chris D'Elia have terrific chemistry, fantastic comic timing, and play very relatable characters. The supporting characters have their moments, too, but it's probably Chris that really makes the show and helps Whitney to shine. He's incredibly wacky, but not overly or unbelievably so.

Here's to many, many more seasons of laughs!

Funny show!
Overall, I really like this show and I hope they make another season. There were several times throughout the season that I have literally laughed out loud. I also liked when the actors were clearly having a hard time not cracking up themselves. Having said that, there have been a few times that I have wondered about this show. Sometimes the storyline of Whitney's group of friends seemed disjointed and almost an entirely different show than the main storyline with Whitney and Alex.

I recommend this show, I think it's really funny and has a lot of potential.

Beatles Stories

Nearly 60 (mostly) insightful interviews.! A must for Beatles fans
Seth Swirsky is not a professional filmmaker (and some of the camera work here shows that), but this is heck of a fascinating documentary project. Swirsky is a musician and a songwriter, with songs recorded by Taylor Dayne, Tina Turner, Al Green and Celine Dion, as well as themes for major motion pictures. But, after playing a gig in Hamburg and hearing stories from locals about the Beatles, he decided to contact a slew of well-known folks who interacted with the Fab Four during their career. How is got access to nearly 60 (mostly) celebrities like Sir George Martin, Graham Nash, Ben Kingley (actually a performing musician before turning to acting), Brian Wilson, Smokey Robinson, still amazes me! But I'm glad he did. The 85-minute film contains about 53 of these interviews - most lasting just a minute or two and a few were done by phone - with appropriate archival footage of the period to embelish them. Some of the stories are well know, but many aren't. And the connections with the...

Terrific stories that add to the Beatles' legacy
This documentary contains dozens of interviews with everyone from Ben Kingsley and Jon Voight to people you've never heard of, like one of the original "Apple Scruffs" (girls who used to hang around outside Apple Records offices hoping to talk to a Beatle).

Director Seth Swirsky wanted to capture as many stories about Beatle encounters as possible. Most of the interviews collected in the 85 minute movie last for only a few minutes before moving onto the next story. It results in a lot of variety. Some of the stories have been told before, but most of them will be unfamiliar to even the most devoted Beatlemaniacs. Some of the people he talked to (George Martin, Norman Smith - Beatles engineer, Joey Molland of Badfinger, Denny Laine of Wings) had professional associations with the Beatles or an ex-Beatle. But others - like The Bangles' Susanna Hoffs, who happened to bump into Ringo at a party - tell starstruck stories of chance encounters.

This DVD is really terrific. As you watch it each story is better than the last. The different stories are very interesting from Graham Nash to Henry Winkler to Sir Ben Kingsley to Art Garfunkel.
The worst part of the DVD is that it ends.
I would recommend this to anyone.

Downton Abbey Seasons 1 & 2 Limited Edition Set - Original UK Version

Uk vs. US versions
For those of you wondering about the difference between the UK version and US version, apparently the US version has had some scenes cut (hours worth of material). So the UK version is completely original and uncut

A bargain set- a MUST OWN, not rent
This series is undoubtedly going to be as long-lived a hit as Upstairs, Downstairs. It ranks in the British perfection class with Foyle's War. It's a Period Costume Drama series with plenty of mega-stars. The magnificent performance of Maggie Smith in a less-than leading role shines through every time she's on the screen (very often), even when she has no lines. Her facial delivery is comic. A paragraph could be written for almost every cast member, each seem to feed off the other in making this a remarkable period drama that takes the viewer back to the era, like it is real.

Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) is the man behind the estate, but it is Mr. Carson (Jim Carter), the butler, who keeps the house and social lives moving. There are 12 cast members that have a role in EVERY episode. Many more who miss just one or two. You fall in love with each in their own way, each a vital role in the make-up of this large family and servants. Not an issues is untouched, since every...

Nice Limited Edition DVD Set
If you like Downton Abbey, and you don't already have the first release seasons 1 & 2 DVD sets of the series, then you should have this. I waited for this set instead of getting the first releases, but really it's more of a repackaging of the original release with the Christmas episode here as well. So buy this if you love Downton and don't already own it...and hurry because the 3rd season comes out in January!

Mahler: Symphony No 8 [Blu-ray]

Far more than just a Barnum & Bailey act
In spite of the fact that over a thousand performers are employed here, this is actually a remarkably 'musical' account of Mahler's colossal 8th symphony. The sound quality captured here is equally remarkable for such a challenging, one-off performance. The enlarged choral forces and augmented string section (strings were combined from both orchestras) shift balances away from the brass, woodwinds and vocal soloists, and transfer greater emphasis - logically enough - on to the choral passages. There is, in fact, historical precedence for doing this and I'll elaborate on that point further down.

A previous reviewer suggested that Dudamel should have striven for a more detailed and clearer performance. But we already have two DVD's of Mahler 8 that do just that: Bernstein/V.P.O./DG (combined with an equally fine Mahler 7) and, more sharply focused yet, Chailly/Gewandhaus Orch./Accentus from the 2011 Leipzig Mahlerfest. That's not to mention a whole slough of very fine and...

A great musical event
Gustavo Dudamel's Mahler First on DVD was, as Clive Goodwin points out, quite disappointing: focused on superficial effect rather than substance, especially in comparison with the stunning Dvorak "New World" he recorded with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart (Birthday Concert for Pope Benedict XVI). One could then suspect that the young conductor had not quite plumbed the depth and idiom of Mahler's musical language. So it was with slight trepidation when I ordered the disk, but everything fell into place happily when I played it the first time around. If you want to know my own personal ambivalent feelings about the Eighth - Mahler's last, gargantuan and somewhat desperate fling with late Romanticism - do read my reviews of the Bernstein (with the Seventh) and Tennstedt (with the First) readings on DVD, both noble and persuasive performances, though now dated in audio and video. The outstanding recent recording by Chailly and the Gewandhausorchester brought the oratorio-symphony...

A Mahler Must
You can't get much more exciting than Dudamel, the Bolivars and the L.A. Phil with more than 1000 on the stage!! The backstage interviews and preparation peeks make this a must-have for a Mahler collection. The music is an exceptional undertaking. We won't see another extravaganza like this in our lifetime.

Heroes: Season Four

Huge imporevement over the past two seasons
Season four of Heroes had the show taking steps back in the right direction. After the disaster of the past two seasons, the show titled this season "Redemption" to try and earn some respect back. In my mind, they did earn redemption. This season wasn't as good as season one, but Heroes was fun to watch again. Heroes hasn't been fun at all since season one. This season finally started to organically develop the characters again and introduced many new characters I enjoyed.

This season starts a few months after season three, and all of the characters are dealing with the repercussions. (spoiler) For instance, after pushing Nathan's mind into Sylar's body, Sylar is now trapped in Matt's head. Sylar for the first half of the season tried to get back into his body, and along the way insults Matt in the most hilarious ways possible. (end spoiler) These guys together was one of the best parts of the season. The new characters this season are all very cool, which is something that...

Surpassed my expectations...
So a few years back this show called "Heroes" was getting all kinds of hype, I finally sat down to watch it (on DVD)...and though I liked certain aspects of it, I eventually found it tedious and pretty much stopped about 1/2 way through.

Then I heard snippets of the plot line of Season 3, and then I managed to start watching season 4 (simultaneously) and I have to say, just when the show seems to keep losing more and more viewers, it seems to be getting better and better.

Part of what makes season 4 a particular treat is the way that the creators and writers really expanded on the more universally applicable concepts of "belonging," "fitting in," "people curious and admiring that may turn to hate," and "redemption." Although this is full of "specials" and great ability clashes and sequences, this season is really rather character focused and humanistic.

Sad Ending For A Show That Started With A Bang
The Heroes TV series began with a huge bang. The characters and intersecting plotlines kept you captivated until the climatic season ending. Very well done.

Season 2 started out slowly, but still had strong acting and character interaction. I enjoyed this season primarily for Hiro's journey back into feudal Japan as Hiro was by far the best character on the show in my opinion.

Season 3 was a mess. As people here have already said, there were characters that we met in Season 2 only to see them drop off the face of the Earth and forgotten in Season 3. Add in stupid storylines like Peter and Nathan's father coming to life (boy was that guy a terribl actor and the internment camp plot line that had some promise, but fell flat in the end.)

So comes Season 4 with hope and promise that they could have redeemed the series back to its original glory, sadly this is not the case. Some quick points:
